Through The Lens: The defining images of LeBron James' 2019-20 season

A picture is worth a thousand words... in this case, literally! In the leadup to the NBA's restart, NBA.com's series 'Through The Lens' will revisit the biggest moments from the biggest players to help set the stage for the return of the season in Orlando.

Up first? LeBron James


It's been another incredible season for LeBron James.

Now in his second season with the Los Angeles Lakers, James is proving that not even Father Time can slow him down. Through 60 games, he's averaging 25.7 points and 7.9 rebounds to go along with a league-leading and career-best 10.6 assists per game. Powered by his play, the Lakers enter the season restart at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida with a 49-14 record, the best in the Western Conference and the second-best in the league.

While there have been a number of memorable moments along the way, here are 12 photos that summarize another historic season for James.

October 5, 2019 — James and Anthony Davis take the floor for the first time as teammates in the NBA in a preseason win over the Golden State Warriors.

The two put on a show. Whereas James posted 15 points and eight assists in 18 minutes, Davis led all scorers with 22 points in 18 minutes.

It turned out to be a taster of what was to come.

November 1, 2019 — History was made when James and Luka Doncic went head-to-head early in the season.

In a Lakers win, James went for 39 points, 16 assists and 12 rebounds to Doncic's 31 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds. In doing so, James and Doncic became the first opponents in NBA history to record 30-point, 15-assist triple-doubles in the same game.

After the game, cameras caught James speaking, uh, glowingly of Doncic.

January 13, 2020 — In a win against his former team, James passed Isiah Thomas on the NBA's all-time assists list. 

Thomas took to Twitter to congratulate James on the milestone.

James now ranks eighth all-time in assists. Chris Paul, Oscar Roberston, Magic Johnson, Mark Jackson, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd and John Stockton are the only players ahead of him.

December 25, 2019 — James played in the 14th Christmas Day game of his NBA career.

The only player in NBA history with more? Kobe Bryant (16).

Kawhi Leonard played spoiler in this one, leading the LA Clippers to a 111-106 win with 35 points and 12 rebounds. James fell one rebound shy of a triple-double, but he shot 9-for-24 from the field in the loss.

January 25, 2020 — LeBron James moved past Kobe Bryant on the NBA's all-time scoring list.

With 34,087 points, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar are the only players in NBA history with more career points than James.

January 31, 2020 — A day after James passed him on the NBA's all-time scoring list, Kobe Bryant died in a tragic helicopter crash.

In the Lakers' first home game following Bryant's death, James delivered an emotional speech in which he honoured Bryant.

"I want to continue along with my teammates to continue his legacy not only for this year but for as long as we can play the game of basketball that we love because that’s what Kobe Bryant would want," James said. "So in the words of Kobe Bryant, Mamba out. But in the words of us, not forgotten. Live on brother."

February 6, 2020 — Less than two weeks following Bryant's death, James threw down an almost identical dunk to one Bryant threw down in the same arena and on the same basket 19 years ago.

"Ever see the movie 'The 6th Man'?" James asked following the game. "Kobe came down, put himself in my body and gave me that dunk on that break."

February 16, 2020 — James played in his 16th All-Star Game, tying him with NBA legend Julius Erving for the third-most All-Star appearances in league history.

In the most competitive All-Star Game in recent history, James scored 23 points and dished out six assists in the win.

It was Kawhi Leonard, however, who was named the All-Star Game's MVP with a game-high 30 points.

February 23, 2020 — Down by one with under a minute remaining, James backs down Jaylen Brown and hits a fadeaway to give the Lakers the lead that they would hold on to to win the game.

James finished with 29 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in the win.

February 25, 2020 — The present and the future.

The first meeting between James and Williamson was unforgettable. In a Lakers win, James scored a season-high 40 points on 17-for-27 shooting from the field. Williamson, meanwhile, put up 29 points, six rebounds and three assists.

March 3, 2020 — In a win over the Philadelphia 76ers, James dished out a game-high 14 assists.

It marked the 38th time this season that James has recorded 10 more assists in a game, extending his career high for a single season.

His previous career high? 33 double-digit assist games in the 2017-18 season.

March 6-8, 2020 — Prior to the season being suspended, James and the Lakers picked up a couple of huge wins.

On March 6, James led the Lakers to victory over Giannis Antetokounmpo's Milwaukee Bucks, going for 37 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

Two days later, James led the Lakers to a victory over Kawhi Leonard's LA Clippers with 28 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Those two performances gave James some momentum in the MVP race that has been headlined by Antetokounmpo all season long. Unfortunately for him, the season was suspended only a few days later.

Time will tell if James and the Lakers can pick up from where they left off when play resumes in Orlando, Florida.
