All you need to know about the NBA's play-in tournament

The NBA's 2019-20 season restart is a one-of-a-kind event.

What makes it even more unique is that as a result of this restart, the NBA announced that there would be a play-in tournament for the final spot in either conference.

Here's all you need to know about the play-in tournament.

Qualification

If the ninth seed is less than four games back of the eighth seed in the Western Conference or Eastern Conference at the end of the seeding games, there will be a play-in tournament.

Format

If the play-in tournament is required, then the conference's eighth seed and ninth seed will battle in a couple of play-in games. The higher-ranked team needs to register one win to advance to the playoffs while the lower seed needs to beat the higher seed twice in a row.

Essentially, both teams will battle in a best-of-three series with the eighth seed already holding a 1-0 series lead.

Timing

When the league first announced its restart plans, no exact time was mentioned for the play-in games. Only the dates were specified: Aug. 16 and 17.

However, as it became clear that a play-in tournament would be required in the Western Conference, the timings for these games have since been announced.

Here's a look at the schedule for the two play-in games:

Game 1 - Aug. 16 at 12:00 a.m. IST

Game 2 - Aug. 17 at 2:00 a.m. IST
