In an official release, Kevin Johnson, coach of the ASA Miami women's basketball team, announced the addition of Khushi Dongre to ASA Miami's signing class of 2019.
Dongre joins the likes of multiple young women who have committed to play college basketball in North America (all in the past year) including Sanjana Ramesh, Vaishnavi Yadav and Srishti Suren.
As per the release, coach Johnson was mightly pleased with Dongre's addition:
"Over the last couple of months of getting to know Khushi, she is always happy and so grateful for the opportunity to come here and play basketball in the USA," Johnson said. "The meaning of her name means happiness and she definitely exemplifies happiness in her personality."
Dongre is only the fourth female from India to play basketball in the US.
"Not many people in my country get this opportunity, I am VERY grateful and can't wait to be at ASA Miami."
Hailing from Aurangabad in Maharashtra, Dongre, just 18 years old, already has quite the resume.
She was a member of the Indian squad at the U16 Women's Asian Championship 2017 that went unbeaten in Division B and earned the promotion to Division A.
She has participated in both NBA Academy India Women's camps held so far - May 2018 and January 2019. In the first camp, she received the Best Teammate award while in the second edition of the camp, she received the coaches award.
She most recently represented India at the FIBA 3x3 U18 Asia Cup in Malaysia from August 22-24, where, as a 14th seed, the Indians finished seventh, going down to top-seeded China in the quarterfinals.
Dongre, who intends to major in Economics and Sports Management, is not the only international athlete in coach Johnson's 2019 signing class. It also includes players from South America and Africa.
