FIBA Asia Quest 3x3 – India Qualifiers: Punjab Steelers win Men's division; Kochi Stars win Women's division

Over this past weekend (Aug. 22-24), the Basketball Federation of India (BFI) conducted the FIBA 3x3 National Championships 2019 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.

The FIBA endorsed event served as the FIBA Asia Quest 3x3 - India Qualifiers. It included 17 men's teams and 12 women's teams representing the states that were affiliated to the BFI.

At the end of the three-day event, Punjab Steelers (Men) and the Kochi Stars (Women) were crowned champions.

The Steelers, consisting of international stars like Amritpal Singh, Amjyot Singh, Arshpreet Singh Bhullar and Rajvir Singh Aujla, beat out the hosts Bengaluru Bulls 21-13 in the men's final.

While Amjyot is India's No. 1 ranked 3x3 player in the FIBA rankings, the other three members of the Steelers squad are also part of India's squad at the Red Bull Reign World Finals in Toronto.

The Punjab team went unbeaten through all their six games with their most competitive contest coming in the semifinals, against the Cochin Customs (21-19). In the third-place playoff, the Customs edged out the Delhi Warriors 21-15.

In the women's final, the Kochi Stars, consisting of stars like Geethu Anna Rahul, Smruthi Radhakrishnan, Surya and Sonumol Soman, beat out the Maratha Yoddhas 21-13.

The Kochi Stars lost their first game but went unbeaten after that with their most competitive contest coming against the Tamil Nadu Tigers 19-18 in the Quater-finals. The Delhi Warriors eased past the Punjab Sparx in the women's third-place playoff.

Both teams (Punjab Steelers and Kochi Stars) will represent India at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Quest 2019 Final to be played in Male (Maldives) from Sept 6-8, 2019.

The champions of the FIBA 3x3 Asia Quest 2019 Final will earn a berth in the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Jeddah in October.
