The First Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup is behind us and the 16 countries headed to the Second Round are finalized.

It can be a confusing process, especially if you haven't been following along all that closely, but that's what we're here for. Below, you can find explanations on how the Second Round and Classification Round work, as well as the teams competing in each division and their groups.

How does the Second Round work?

The World Cup began with 32 teams. The top-two teams in each of the eight First Round groups advance to the Second Round while the bottom-two teams in each group are eliminated, dropping down to the Classification Round.

The main thing to know about the Second Round - the results (and points) from the First Round carry over. You receive two points for a win and one point for a loss.

There are four groups of four teams. Each group is made up of two teams from the same group and two teams from a different group that advanced out of the First Round.

Every team plays against the two teams in their group that they did not face in the First Round.

The top-two teams from each group (8 teams total) advance to a bracket-style, single-elimination tournament to compete for a medal.

How does the Classification Round work?

The 16 teams that failed to advance out of the First Round drop down to the Classification Round - again, the results (and points) carry over.

If you are in the Classification Round you are eliminated from medaling at the World Cup, but are still competing for the chance to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
