FIBA postpones multiple tournaments including 3x3 Olympic Qualification Tournament in Bengaluru in light of COVAD-19 virus breakout

With the ongoing breakout of the COVAD-19 virus across various countries in the world, FIBA announced on Wednesday, the postponement of various upcoming tournaments.

The most notable being the 3x3 Olympic Qualification Tournament that was supposed to be held in Bengaluru from March 18-22. No new date has been announced.

With regards to when the tournament is postponed and whether there is a change in venue, here's what the FIBA press release stated:

FIBA is now working in close collaboration with the International Olympic Committee, on the best solution possible in the circumstances, considering that this tournament needs to take place before the FIBA 3x3 Universality Olympic Qualifier Tournament scheduled to be played in Budapest, Hungary, from April 24 to 26, 2020.

A couple of days prior to FIBA's announcement, the logo for the tournament was released with Anil Kumble, India's leading wicket-taker in Test Cricket (619), in attendance.

As per the FIBA site for the Olympic qualifiers, India's men's squad was headlined by the veteran duo of Vishesh Bhriguvanshi and Amritpal Singh while Rajan Sharma and Aravind Annadurai rounded up the four-man squad.

For the Indian women, the squad included Shireen Limaye, Navaneetha PU, Sreekala Rani and Pushpa Senthil Kumar.

This 3x3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which will host 40 teams (20 per gender), will award six Olympic tickets (three per gender) and add them to the already qualified eight teams.

As per the FIBA press release, a couple of other events were also postponed. Here's a quick look at the new dates for those tournaments:

The FIBA U16 Asian Championship 2019, which was scheduled to take place in Beirut, Lebanon from Apr. 5-12, 2020, has been canceled altogether.
