Jaylen Brown erupts for historic 40 as surging Celtics record wire-to-wire victory over archrival Lakers

Watch out for the Boston Celtics!

With a statement wire-to-wire victory, where they led by a maximum of 27, the C's made light work of the shorthanded defending champions by defeating them 121-113. Six players finished in double figures but it was all powered by Jaylen Brown.

He led all scorers, going off for 40 points in 32 minutes on a super-efficient 17-of-20 shooting from the field.

"Jaylen was just unreal tonight," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said postgame.

The only reason the final score was as close as it was, including the Lakers bringing it down as few as five (117-112) in the final minutes because the Celtics gave up 26 points on their 21 turnovers against the reigning champions who were without All-Stars in LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

"We have a lot to improve on," Stevens continued. "Thankfully we had all of that run in the fourth. We certainly needed it, because it got real interesting at the end there."

However, Brown made it clear that "a win is a win."

This victory, the Celtics' fifth straight - tying the longest streak this season, comes off the back of a couple of convincing ones in Denver and Portland. It ties them with the Hawks for the fourth seed with a 30-26 record but with Atlanta owning the tiebreaker, Boston slips to fifth.

Going forward, the Celtics have the seventh-easiest remaining schedule. So as things stand, there are plenty of factors in favour of the Celtics rising over the remainder of the season. Only time will tell if they'll deliver on the expected wins ahead.
