It's a season of firsts for Los Angeles Lakers newly-acquired superstar Anthony Davis.

In addition to the new look of him donning the purple and gold, the six-time All-Star will be wearing a new number as well. Following the reports that indicated Davis wouldn't be able to accept No. 23 from LeBron James , he took to Instagram on the eve of his official introduction to announce that he would be wearing No. 3 in his first season as a Laker.

Taking the number all the way back to elementary school! #3

A post shared by Anthony Davis (@antdavis23) on

In the Instagram post, Davis, who has worn No. 23 since his high school years, shared that he'd be "taking the number all the way back to elementary school!"

The No. 23 has been good to Davis, after winning a National Championship in his freshman season at the University of Kentucky, he was selected first overall by the then-New Orleans Hornets in the 2012 NBA Draft, the franchise would become known as the Pelicans prior to Davis' second season.

In seven years as No. 23, Davis scored over 11,000 points, earned six All-Star selections, three All-NBA selections, three All-Defensive Team Selections and was the league's blocks leader three times.

As he embarks on a new stage in his career, Davis will have a new number to match.

Whether or not he will change back to No. 23 following the 2019-20 season remains to be seen, but if he and the Lakers have enough success this year, he could very well elect to stick with what worked.
