In near perfect display in Portland, Luka Doncic puts spotlight on turnaround of 3-point shot

Luka Doncic's 3-point shot is well and truly back.

In a huge 40-point victory (132-92) over the Trail Blazers in Portland, the young Slovenian caught fire from deep.

He knocked down a career-high eight 3-pointers, tying a tally he nailed in January in Dallas against the Trail Blazers, going 8-of-8 to start from deep tonight.

It was his makes early in the third quarter that really opened this game up and put it out of reach. In the Mavericks' 19-0 run to start the third quarter, Doncic scored (9) or assisted on 11 of those points.

Eventually, Dallas outscored Portland 38-15 in the third quarter to push their lead to 34 - allowing Doncic to sit out the fourth quarter.

His game-high 37 points are tied for the most by a Maverick through three quarters in the last 25 seasons, but this game really put a spotlight on Doncic's recent 3-point shooting turnaround.

In the first 22 games, he shot a career-low 29.6% from beyond the arc while averaging 2.0 makes per game. However, in the 16 games since, he's knocking down 4.2 3-pointers - only three players including Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard have made more - at an efficiency of 44.7 percent.

That elevated efficiency has Doncic's 3-point shooting percentage from a career-low early on to a career-high 35.5%.

To put this game in Portland in perspective, the 22-year-old took six games and 41 attempts to knock down his first eight 3-pointers of the season.

"Tonight it was spectacular to watch. And he made it look effortless." Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said postgame of Doncic's peformance.
