NBA adopts coach's challenge full-time beginning with the 2020-21 season

The National Basketball Association has offcially announced that the coach's challenge has been approved on a full-time basis starting with the 2020-21 season.

The league's board of governors voted to bring the feature in on a full-time basis after a recommendation by the NBA's competition committee. The coach's challenge was introduced in a one-year trial last season and affords head coaches the opporunity to call for instant replay review on certain plays during the course of a game.

In a statement released by the league, Byron Spruell, NBA President, League Operations expressed the league's excitement with the development.

"Our coaches were receptive to the pilot version of the Coach's Challenge, increasing usage and becoming more comfortable with the concept and strategic aspects as the season progressed."

"We are excited to adopt the Coach's Challenge as part of our NBA rules and will continue dialogue with the coaches, the Competition Committee and the NBA's Board of Governors as we move forward."

In addition to the trial rules from last season, clarification has been provided regarding specific scenarios.

  • A team loses its right to challenge the preceding call if it incurs a delay of game violation prior to initiating the challenge.
  • When officials confer to determine the appropriate call, the window of time within which a team must "immediately" challenge the call starts after the officials provide the negatively affected team notice of the final ruling on the play.

According to the league, there were 633 challenged calls during the regular season and 67 during the playoffs. The overturn rate was 44 percent during the regular season and 40 percent during the postseason.

The 2020-21 season tips off on December 23.
