Christian Wood vs. Hornets

It took an extra period of five minutes but for the second time in four nights, the Houston Rockets upset a high-seeded Eastern Conference team.

After defeating the then 12-6 Chicago Bulls 118-113, the rebuilding Texas franchise pulled off another heist at the Toyota Center. This time, against the 13-8 Charlotte Hornets that had won eight of their previous nine coming into this contest.

In a 146-143 high-scoring thriller, both teams had as many as six players scoring in double figures.

As a result, there were plenty of records tied or broken over the course of this 53-minute entertainer. Here's a look at some of them

Christian Wood's career-night

Christian Wood had a game, scoring his career-high of 33 points on a remarkable efficiency of 13-of-19 from the field.

Along with his points tally, he also racked up 16 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in 41 minutes of action. He also registered the game-high plus-minus of +16.

His 16 rebounds are just three shy of his career-high 19. He played a huge role in the hosts leading by their largest margin of 17 late in the third quarter as he did most of his damage early.

Rockets-Hornets tie NBA record for 3-pointers

Of the 289 total points scored, 132 came from beyond the arc as both teams combined for an NBA record 43 made 3-pointers. The first time this NBA record was back in Jan. 2019 when the Warriors and Pelicans knocked down a combined 43 made 3-pointers.

Rockets knocked down a season-high 23 3-pointers on 49 attempts for an efficiency of 46.9 percent while the Hornets nailed 20 at a rate of 40.0 percent.

Of Houston's season-high 23 3-pointers, the trio of Garrison Matthews (5), Armoni Brooks (5) and Eric Gordon (4) combined for 14 makes on 27 attempts.

For the Hornets, the sharpshooter was Terry Rozier, who knocked down six 3s and moves past Devonte' Graham for sixth on the franchise's all-time 3-pointers made list.

Rockets first win streak since....

With this victory, the Rockets improve to 3-16 for the season courtesy of their first set of consecutive wins this season.

In fact, this two-game win streak is the team's first since Feb. 2 earlier this year, when the team won the last of a six-game win streak.

“It feels great to get a win,” Wood said. “We went a month without winning a game. We haven’t seen that winning energy in the locker room so it’s good to see it. Now we have that winning momentum, and we need to just carry it over.”

That means the Rockets have their first 'win streak' in nearly 300 days. In between, the Rockets went 9-62 in the 71 games they played through the second half of the 2020-21 season and the early portion of this season.

Included in those 71 games are the team's two longest losing streaks - 20 (Feb. 6 - Mar. 20, 2021) and 15 (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22, 2021).
