Report: All-NBA center Joel Embiid to sign to four-year supermax extension with Philadelphia 76ers

Joel Embiid will reportedly be with the Philadelphia 76ers for at least the next six seasons.

According to reports from ESPN's Ramona Shelburne and Adrian Wojnarowski, Embiid is finalizing a four-year, $196 million supermax contract extension that will keep him with the Sixers through the 2026-27 NBA season, adding to the two years and $65 million remaining on his current deal.

ESPN's Bobby Marks provided a breakdown of what the figures on Embiid's supermax extension could look like based on a salary cap projection for the 2023-24 season.

Embiid, 27, is coming off of a season in which he averaged a career-high 28.5 points to go along with 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 blocks while appearing in 51 of a possible 72 games. Through his efforts, he finished second in MVP voting while earning Second Team All-NBA and All-Defensive Second Team honours, all while leading Philadelphia to a 49-23 record and the East's top seed.

Despite suffering a torn meniscus in Game 4 of the opening round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs, Embiid only missed one postseason game, posting averages of 28.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists over 11 games, as the Sixers saw their run come to an end in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Securing Embiid long-term resolidifies his standing as the franchise cornerstone, while president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and general manager Elton Brand continue to explore avenues to improve Philadelphia's roster.
