Report: Anthony Davis to opt-out of player option and re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers

Anthony Davis is expected to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason ... but not for long.

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Davis is planning to opt-out of his $28.8 million player option for the 2020-21 season, only to re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Charania added that Davis and his agent, Rich Paul, will hold meetings in the coming weeks to discuss contract options.

As I wrote earlier this week, Davis will have a number of options when it comes to re-signing with the Lakers depending on what he's looking for.

The most popular options: 1+1, meaning a two-year contract with a player option in the second season, which would align his contact with that of LeBron James and give him control; 2+1, which would give him the option of becoming a free agent again once he has 10 years of service, making him eligible for 35 percent of the cap as opposed to 30 percent; 4+1, which would lock him into max-level money until his early 30s.

In his first season in Los Angeles, Davis led the Lakers in scoring with 26.1 points per game to go along with 9.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.3 blocks, earning him a spot on the All-NBA First Team. He took his game to another level in the playoffs, resulting in his first championship and the franchise's 17th, tying the Lakers with the Boston Celtics for the most all-time.

When asked about how he might handle his potential free agency after winning the title, Davis said that he had "no idea" and that "we'll figure it out."
