The Los Angeles Lakers didn't make a splashy move for a big name point guard in free agency, because they knew they had their point guard all along.

According to Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes, the Lakers intend to start LeBron James at point guard next season, lining up in the backcourt with recently acquired shooting guard Danny Green.

Running the offence is nothing new for James, who has operated as point forward for most of his career, averaging 7.2 assists per game through 16 seasons - upping that production of late to 8.8 assists per game over the past three seasons, including 8.3 per game in his first season as a Laker.

He currently ranks 10th on the NBA's all-time assists list (8,662)

The shift to being a full-time point guard is a move that has one eye on the future as the 34-year-old transitions into the latter part of his career, which always seemed destined to see him become more of a playmaking guard to lighten the physical workload on his body.

However, moving to point guard full-time will present a new challenge for James on the defensive end, guarding ones and twos for long stretches.

At present, the Lakers have Rajon Rondo, Quinn Cook and Alex Caruso at the one, but given their glut of talent at forward/centre in Kyle Kuzma, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins and JaVale McGee, moving James to point guard maximises their talent level on the floor at all times.
