A month after free agency began on July 1st, Carmelo Anthony still remains on the list of best available free agents.

However, that might not have been the case if one of his former teams had taken a step towards contention by signing two major free agents like Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, the New York Knicks considered bringing back Melo.

Anthony became a member of the Knicks when he was acquired from the Denver Nuggets at the 2010-11 trade deadline in a deal that involved 12 players and three teams.

As a Knick, Melo played 412 regular-season games, averaging 24.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists on 44.3 percent shooting from the field. He led the franchise to three postseason appearances (2011, 2012 and 2013), averaging 28.0 points and 7.7 rebounds on 40.4 percent shooting from the field in 21 games.

A Conference Semifinals appearance in 2013 was the furthest the Knicks went with him on their roster. As a Knick, Melo was named to seven consecutive All-Star Game appearances, earning All-NBA second-team honors twice.
