This Date in NBA History: Robert Parish becomes NBA's all-time leader in games played & more

On April 6th in 1996, Robert Parish became the NBA's all-time leader in regular-season games played.

Suiting up for the Charlotte Hornets against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Parish surpassed the previous record of 1,560 games set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar during his 20-year NBA career.

In this record-setting game, he finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three blocks in 39 minutes of action as the Hornets won 93-89.

Parish would finish his career with 1,611 games. Over the course of his 21-year career, he played for four different franchises in the NBA - Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics, Charlotte Hornets, and Chicago Bulls.

Nicknamed 'The Chief', Parish earned nine All-Star selections and made four All-NBA teams, winning four NBA championships - 1981, 1984, 1986, 1997. He was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2003.

  • In 1975, Wes Unseld grabbed 30 rebounds in the final game of the 1974-75 season to edge out Dave Cowens (14.7) for the league's rebounding title with a season average of 14.8.
  • In 1991, Isiah Thomas scored 16 points in a 101-88 loss to the New York Knicks. In the process, he surpassed the 15,000 point mark for his career.
  • In 1995, Danny Ainge, by knocking down a couple of 3-pointers in a Suns' 127-123 win at Washington, became the third player at that time to have knocked down 1,000 3-pointers.
